Wood-pressed oil is also known as cold-pressed oil. In Tamil, it is popularly called mara chekku ennai. Over the past few decades, its use declined with the rise of refined oils and became limited to a few traditional villages. However, wood-pressed oils are now making a strong comeback.
Some modern methods use solvents during extraction, making the oil potentially toxic and harmful to health. Cold pressing, on the other hand, is a natural method that preserves the oil’s molecular integrity. Wood-pressed oil yields less, but it is far healthier than modern alternatives. The traditional method of wooden ghani crushing was widely used for this purpose.
Oil extracted using a wooden Ghani is called wood-pressed oil, also known as cold-pressed oil. The instrument used for extraction is referred to as a Chekku, Ghani, or Kolhu, with different names across Indian languages, all describing traditional cold-pressing machines.
